last week i jumped out of a plane. flying towards the ground at 200km/h on an island in the middle of the mediterranean wasn't something i was expecting for my sunday afternoon, but i'm sure glad it happened. funnily enough, it wasn’t what i experienced on the way down that had the biggest impact on me, but what i left behind. as my partner tess and i made our way up to 12,000 feet in the tiny plane strapped to the front of a random, i decided to leave some things up there. things i was holding onto. stories i was telling myself. beliefs that no longer served me. the past 6 months has been full of realisations and growth. i somewhat let go of a company i had spent the last 18 months building, that had become a part of my identity. i picked up the camera and started creating visual work again, then hit the road with a suitcase and began travelling full time. intentionally creating more space for me to read, think, and deeply understand myself more to gain clarity on the direction of the next chapter of life. i woke up one morning and in 12 hours had made a film about life lately. i’m proud of it because of how authentic it feels. a reflection of life and the journey i’m currently on. the last couple months have been spent in indonesia and europe with friends, as I’ve given myself time to let all of these thoughts and ideas breath. i've been inspired to document again, which is why i'm making so many youtube videos right now, like this one. one of my best friends jai recently hosted a retreat in the french countryside with 100+ entrepreneurs coming together to hang out. it was basically a school summer camp but for founders. so many of the people there were making millions yet everyone would all play carnival games like they were kids in high school. i documented the week and left inspired and grateful for the environments i find myself in all over the world. my website recently got a makeover as i spent a couple weeks compiling old work to showcase. it made me proud looking back at all the visual work i've created. i've been lucky enough to be doing this photography and filmmaking thing full time for 7 years now, and it's taken me to all corners of the globe. on the other side of that, it's felt harder than ever being so ambitious because you never really feel like you are where you want to be. i've come to realise that gap is something that will never go away, and once you can make peace with it, everything becomes easier. i'm feeling excited to dive deeper into my craft, to refine my process and learn a million new skills. i stopped striving for a while because i got comfortable. i thought i had hit a ceiling, only to realise it was my ego. in this game, you can never stop learning. curious i am again. i’m reading a great book called mastery by robert greene. it explores the idea of mastering a skill or profession over decades of your life until you're truly a master. i think it's glorified more than ever these days to be a jack of all trades (which i think is great) but i'm really enamoured by the idea of being world class at one thing. it feels so easy these days with all the distractions of the world to be pulled in a million different directions as we're almost forced to just be 'good' at everything. i've been thinking a lot about what i want to pour my energy into over the next few years. less truly is more, and i’ve really been trying to narrow my focus for a long time now. so many thoughts and realisations that have been transferred from head to pen to paper that now my journal is almost full. can't wait until i'm 80 to sit down and time travel back to read my mind as a 26 year old travelling the world. hopefully by then i've got more of an idea about what i'm doing. anyway i guess that's a bit of an update. my last newsletter was over a year ago, and since then, business, travel, relationships and creativity has taught me so much i struggle to even remember who i was back then. i've become truly comfortable with change, and am embracing it more than ever before as i try to see who i can really become. i hope life is treating you well, and if you've made it this far, i appreciate you being here. much love xx liam |
